Assessment
 
The Student Assessment Guide and Learning Plan describes the evidence required to be competent in this unit. 

You can track your progress by comparing it against unit requirements and at every stage of your learning and study. You can also get support from your iTAFE mentor and adviser.



Study Guide

There are many ways that you might choose to make your way through the unit. The diagram and suggested sessions (below) will help to plan your learning through the Provide care for children unit. The sessions outlined below are a suggestion only - you may have another way that you prefer to study.





Session 1 - Physical care (Blue tiles)





This includes:


  • United Nations Rights of the Child
  • Early Childhood Australia Code of Ethics
  • Maslow's hierarchy of needs
  • Promoting hygiene with children
  • Sun protection
  • Toileting
  • Creating quality mealtime environments

A few points to think about for your blog:


Why is it important to encourage children to take increasing responsibilities for their physical needs? How do you do this?


How do you promote positive mealtime environments?


Session 2 - Physical activity (pink tiles)





This includes:


  • Physical guidelines for 0-5yrs
  • Physical guidelines for 5-12yrs
  • Childhood obesity
  • Ways educators can promote physical activity
  • Fundamental movement skills and ways to enhance this development in children


A few points to think about for your blog:


How effectively does your service promote physical activity?


What factors can limit a child's exposure to physical activity?


What successful experience have you set up recently to encourage fundamental skills? What made this successful?



Session 3 - Enabling environments (Purple tiles)



This includes:


  • National Quality Standards - physical environment requirements
  • Indoor environment and opportunities
  • Outdoor environment and opportunities
  • How to create an enabling environment
  • How the environment can encourage children to make choices
  • Ways to promote children's involvement in the environment





A few points to think about for your blog:


How enabling do you believe your environment is to children? What changes could you make to allow the children more involvement in being able to make choices?


Do you believe your philosophy is consistent when the children are in the outdoor and indoor space? What challenges you?



Session 4 - Routines and transitions (Orange tiles)



This includes:


  • Emotional development of children
  • How to assist children in dealing with stress
  • Separation anxiety
  • Planning effective transitions
  • Ways to manage routines 
  • Importance of the family partnership with managing routines and transitions





A few points to think about for your blog:


How often do you transition children throughout the day? Are all the transitions necessary?

How important is it to consider children's individual routines in the education and care setting?
